Rehabilitation of water bodies

Rehabilitation of water bodies means the application of biological and/or chemical and/or physical (including technical) techniques and methods to improve the overall ecological conditions of a water body or by creating/restoring its recreational value. EIC finances such activities from both the Environmental Programme and the Cohesion Fund. The Environmental Programme receives financing applications every year (generally twice a year). Cohesion Fund grants are channelled to the Environment Information Centre through an investment plan and also through an application round.

Environmental Program
supports activities related to the rehabilitation and maintenance of surface bodies of water which help in preserving or achieving their good or very condition or ecological potential.

Cohesion Fund: the improvement of the condition of flowing water bodies

The aim of the grants is to improve the ecological condition of flowing bodies of water and the ecological potential of considerably altered bodies of water or artificial bodies of water. Activities supported include the opening or improving of access for fish by constructing passageways for fish and, if necessary, reconstructing dams and removing sediments from flowing bodies of water. In the framework of projects financed in 2009, the said activities are to be carried out on ten Estonian rivers by the Environment Information Centre.
